Melanie Joy ‘Lani’ McGavock

Former local woman worked in Calif., Arizona

---- — SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Melanie Joy “Lani” McGavock of Scottsdale died early Monday morning, June 24, 2013, in Scottsdale after a recent illness. She was 70.

Mrs. McGavock was born Nov. 19, 1942, in Sharon to Oswald and Eleanor Christie Maschgan.

She was a 1960 graduate of Farrell High School and attended Youngstown Business School and Artistic School of Beauty, San Diego State University satellite campus and Northland Pioneer College, taking classes in interior design and business.

Her passion was decorating her home and those of her friends.

She was a voracious reader and loved traveling, music and dance. One of the items on her “bucket list” was to learn to dance the Argentine tango.

She enjoyed getting together with her girlfriends for “girls night out” and loved spending time with her wonderful, fun-loving family. She dearly missed her Pennsylvania friends and thought of them often.

Her dogs, Willie and Lulu, were also a very important part of her life.

Melanie worked in the industrial relations department of the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. She held various positions in California before moving to Arizona where she was an administrative assistant to the principal at Show Low (Ariz.) Junior High School for 20 years before retiring in 2004.

She was a member of American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a former member of Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church in Hermitage.

Melanie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Melissa Jean Maschgan.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Mel McGavock, Lakeside, Ariz.; her son, Mickey Ryan McGavock, also Lakeside; her sister, Marilyn Maschgan, Las Vegas; and her brother, Erik Maschgan and his wife Ruthanne, Waretown, N.J.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 28, in Calvary Baptist Church, 241 E. McNeil, Show Low.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial contributions to Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church, 950 Maple Drive, Hermitage, PA 16148.
