Robert A. ‘Bob’ Kaltenbaugh

Car dealer, councilman served church, community

---- — Robert A. “Bob” Kaltenbaugh of Sandy Lake passed away unexpectedly at 7:35 p.m. Monday (10-7-13) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 90.

Born Sept. 17, 1923, in Millcreek Township, Mr. Kalten-baugh was a son of Albert J. and Lois G. Andrews Kalten-baugh.

He was a 1940 graduate of the former Sandy Lake High School.

Mr. Kaltenbaugh was an honorably discharged Army World War II veteran.

After returning from the war, he began working at Walker Chevrolet of Sandy Lake, which he would eventually own and operate with his brother, Chuck. It is now owned and operated by Bob Kaltenbaugh, Bob’s son.

Mr. Kaltenbaugh was a longtime active member of Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church, where he was instrumental in many happenings at the church including serving on the board of directors, church treasurer and Sunday school superintendent. At a regional level, he served 40 years as district board member and district treasurer.

Bob was very active and community-oriented. He served 25 years on the Houghton College board of directors; was past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Sandy Lake Rotary Club; an active member of the Stoneboro Lions Club; and served on Sandy Lake Borough Council, many years as president. For 40 years, he served on the board of Mercer County State Bank, during which time he was board chairman for many years.

Bob loved the outdoors and loved to work. He enjoyed hunting, golfing and cutting wood. With his wife, Jean, he loved to travel.

Most of all, Bob was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed.

His wife, the former Jean L. Walker, whom he married June 27, 1946, survives at home.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Susan J. Auerbach and her husband Gary; two sons, Robert W. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Cathy; and Ray J. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Susan, all Sandy Lake; nine grandchildren, Michele Mumford and her husband Jason, Edinboro; Lisa Kaltenbaugh, Pittsburgh; Mark Kaltenbaugh and his wife Nina, Sandy Lake; Shawn Proper and his wife Dawn, Mercer; Chad Proper and his wife Tina; and Linnie Reither and her husband Rick, all Stoneboro; Jennifer Gadsby and her husband Isaac; and Josh Auerbach and Jacob Auerbach, all Sandy Lake; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, C. Dale Kaltenbaugh and his wife Margaret; and Charles B. “Chuck” Kaltenbaugh and his wife Joan, all Sandy Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John A. “Skip” Kaltenbaugh.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (10-10-13) and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday (10-11-13) in Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church, 3096 Sandy Lake Grove City Road.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. Charles Williamson, retired, officiating.

Interment: With committal service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
