Catherine “Kay” Banas of Seneca Road, South Pymatuning Township, passed away of natural causes at 10:17 p.m. on her birthday, Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 94.
Mrs. Banas was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Farrell, a daughter of Michael and Mildred Maykut Kubyako.
A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Farrell and was a member of Farrell High School’s graduating class of 1937.
In the 1940s, Catherine began working at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. making torpedoes as part of the war effort. She later retired from the corporation as a coil winder.
In her early years, Kay worked for Joy Cone Co. on South Irvine Avenue when it was known as the George and Thomas Cone Co.
Catherine will be remembered as a wonderful cake baker who loved to decorate cakes for special occasions.
She was a charter member of St. John’s Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Sharon, which is now St. John’s Orthodox Church, Hermitage.
Catherine enjoyed traveling to local casinos and playing bingo.
Her husband, Michael Banas, whom she married Jan. 26, 1946, passed away May 22, 1988.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Carol Kay Banas Maykowski and her husband Robert, Sharpsville; four sons, Robert L. Banas and his wife Judith, also Sharpsville; Ronald L. Banas and his wife Lois, Hermitage; and Michael J. Banas and Steve A. Banas, both Sharpsville; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and David Trepanosky; April Lynn Maykowski; Timothy and Jeffrey Banas; and Geri and Gene Ansinger; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Helen Ledney, Mary Rosko, Anna Ledney and Mildred Kubyako; and four brothers, Michael, George, Andrew and John Kubyako.
In lieu of flowers, Kay’s family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in her memory to please consider St. John’s Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
