Benjamin ‘Bennie’ F. Porter Jr.

Lordstown retiree, Army vet owned barber shop

-----

---- — A funeral celebration of life service will be held Saturday for Benjamin “Bennie” F. Porter Jr. of Hermitage. He departed this life Tuesday morning, April 16, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 79.

Mr. Porter was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Sharon, a son of Benjamin Porter Sr. and Utha Belle Lee Porter.

He attended Sharon High School, where he participated in its football program. As an alumnus of the Barber Institute in Pittsburgh, he was licensed in the State of Pennsylvania.

He was the owner and operator of the former Porter’s Barber Shop for more than 50 years.

Mr. Porter was a member of the Army, proudly serving during the Korean conflict.

He was formerly employed with Shenango Furnace Mill and General Motors Corp.’s Lordstown (Ohio) car assembly plant for 42 years, retiring in 2006.

He was a lifelong member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Sharon; and was a former member of Free and Accepted Masons.

Mr. Porter’s love for sports was only surpassed by his love of fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the ultimate host to everyone who graced his home with their presence. He will be sadly missed by his family, neighbors and friends.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 55 years, the former LaVerne “Bunnie” Culp; two daughters, Jacqueline J. Cruz and Phyllis “Fee Fee” White; his son, Benjamin “Stuff” Porter III; five grandsons, who were raised like his own, Jeffrey T. Porter, Marcus A. Horvath, Julio Cruz Jr., Rico Cruz and Terrence W. White; two granddaughters, Macy Horvath and Selena Brandt; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Francina Sanders, Youngstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fannie B. McCoy.
