Wallace R. Thompson

Steel business retiree was a founder, officer of clubs

---- — POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Wallace R. Thompson of Pompano Beach passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013. He was 83.

Mr. Thompson was born July 17, 1929, in Cleveland.

Wally graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1947 and from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, in 1951 with a bachelor of arts in economics. In college, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

After graduation, he worked for American Steel and Wire in Cleveland, a division of US Steel Corp.

Wally was transferred to Pittsburgh with US Steel (USX) in 1957 and the family lived in Upper St. Clair until 1970, when he was transferred to Sharon. At the time, Sharon was the largest steel territory in the U.S. He retired from USX in 1996. Wally loved the steel business and worked for United Steel Service for three years after his retirement.

He spent winters in Pompano Beach and returned to Sharon each May. Wally loved tennis, golf, and playing gin rummy and bridge and was one of the founding members of the Shenango Valley Racquet Club. He enjoyed the Internet and playing cards online with new friends from many states.

Wally was a past president of Sharon Country Club and the Lions Club in Pittsburgh; a former member of the Sharon Social Fishing Club, St. Clair Country Club and the Mining and Electrical Maintenance Association of Pittsburgh; and a member of Avalon at Buhl Farm and Lighthouse Point Yacht and Racquet Club.

He married Jo Ann Bradley on June 27, 1952, in Fairmount Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Heights. Their children are Wallace Scott Thompson and his wife Donna, Greenville, S.C.; Wendy Leigh Thompson, Westport Island, Maine; and Bradley John Thompson and his wife Marcia, Sharon. Grandchildren are Amanda Thompson Oliver and her husband Christian, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Alessandra Thompson, Greenville, S.C.;  Hallie Thompson, Philadelphia; and Colin Thompson, Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Thompson; and his parents, Wallace Clifton Thompson and Elizabeth Godley Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name to First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146; or Ohio Wesleyan University Development Office, Mowry Alumni Center, 61 S. Sandusky St., Delaware OH 43015, noting gift in memory of Wallace R. Thompson ‘51.
