Jack A. Greenfield Sr.

Army veteran retired as state prison officer

---- — A funeral and committal service will be held Wednesday for Jack A. Greenfield Sr. of 294 Leech Road, Sugar Grove Township. He passed away Sunday morning (4-21-13) in Family Hospice and Palliative Care, Pittsburgh, after a six-year battle with cancer. He was 71.

Mr. Greenfield was born Jan. 21, 1942, in Greenville to Leslie E. and Mildred M. Fry Greenfield.

He attended Greenville Senior High School.

Mr. Greenfield was employed for 20 years at the State Regional Correctional Facility in Mercer, retiring in 2001 as a sergeant. He was well respected by his fellow corrections officers.

Mr. Greenfield served in the Army’s 149th Aviation Transport during the Vietnam conflict and was on active duty from 1959 to 1967.

He was of the Protestant faith and a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145 and Family Moose Center 276, both Greenville. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township, where he had been a member of the honor guard.

Jack’s other interests included woodworking, gold prospecting and riding his motorcycle.

Surviving are: a daughter, Patti Spencer and her husband Rodney, Bridgeport, W.Va.; three sons, Jack A. Greenfield Jr. and his wife Deborah; Troy Greenfield; and Steven Greenfield and his wife Missy, all Greenville; a brother, Douglas Greenfield and his wife Jeanne, Stoneboro; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepdaughter, Terri Newhouse.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Center, 144 Main St.; or Strayhaven Animal Shelter, 94 Donation Road, both Greenville, PA 16125.

Service: Funeral and committal service at 10 a.m. Wednesday (4-24-13) in the funeral home with the Rev. David E. Cox, pastor of First Baptist Church, Greenville, officiating. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township, will render military honors at the conclusion of the service.

Inurnment: Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville.
