A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday for Walter Richard Strosser of Hermitage. He passed away peacefully Thursday (5-29-14) in the loving arms of his family, in Bradenton, Fla. He was 81.
Mr. Strosser was born July 18, 1932, in Mercer to Walter E. and Lucille (Hughes) Strosser. He graduated from Mercer High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Grove City College in 1955, and a master’s in education from University of Pittsburgh. He served in the Air Force from 1955-57.
Mr. Strosser taught at Mercer High School from 1957-61, before beginning a long career as an insurance agent. He was with Penn Mutual from 1961-84 and Principal Mutual from 1984 until recently. He served three times as president of Mercer County Life Underwriters.
In 1972, Walter began his involvement with Hermitage Little League. Over the years, he served as coach, manager, umpire, and league president.
In 1991, he was appointed district administrator for Pennsylvania Little League District 2. He served in that position until 2013.
In 2006, the lighted field at Hermitage Little League was named Strosser Field in his honor. He was inducted into the Mercer County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
Mr. Strosser was a member of Church of Notre Dame and Hermitage Kiwanis. He volunteered at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, and as a poll worker for Mercer County Board of Elections. He also enjoyed reading to children at the library. He was a Buhl Day Honoree in 2008.
In recent years, Walter played his music collection for the residents of Whispering Oaks Retirement Community in Hermitage, where he resided briefly in 2013 before relocating to Florida to be near his children.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Strosser, Philadelphia; daughter, April Thomas, and son, Dr. Mark Strosser, both Bradenton; granddaughter, Jessica Ireton, Tampa, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Dominic, and Danica; stepsons Tim Hodge, Columbus, Ohio; and Kevin Hodge, York, Pa.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Hugh Bertha McCoy, cqMary Davis, and brothers Larry, John, and Gene Strosser.

Service: Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. There will be a lunch reception for family and friends immediately following Mass.
