Joseph Gunn Sr.

Westinghouse retiree was active 2nd Baptist member

---- — On Tuesday afternoon (7-30-13) Joseph Nathaniel Elijah Gunn Sr. was called home to his eternal rest in the Lord. He resided with his wife in Streamwood, Ill.. He was 89.

Joseph Gunn was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Mercer County to Walker Gunn Sr. and Malinda Lee Gunn.

He attended West Middlesex schools.

Joseph was married to Harriet Bernice Wright Gunn for 62 years. He was dutiful in his care of her and continuously showed his love and devotion to her until his passing.

Joseph was a strong family man, exceptional husband and father, and a good and faithful servant.

The father of four children, he and Bernice showed their children a true Christian model of loving and God-fearing parents.

He consistently supported his children, extended family members and friends whenever and wherever the need arose throughout his life.

He was truly the “salt of the earth” and will be missed by family and friends.

Joseph grew up on a farm and had a lifelong love of gardening, tractors and fishing.

He was mechanically inclined and even built the home where he and Bernice raised their family and lived for over 40 years.

He was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and retired in about 1984.

As an African-American, he held several ground-breaking positions at Westinghouse.

He was a 50-plus year member of Prince Hall Calumet Lodge 25, Farrell.

He was a long-standing member of Second Baptist Church of Farrell, where he served on the deacon board and was otherwise active and held various positions.

As deacon, he regularly visited the sick and shut-in and witnessed to the lost.

Joseph was a respected and well-beloved member of the Shenango Valley community for many years.  

Joseph leaves behind: his beloved wife Harriet Bernice Wright Gunn; four children, Joseph Gunn, Bartlett, Ill.; Raymond (Ayesha) Gunn, Accra, Ghana; Darnice (Jonathan) Gunn Culp. Evans, Ga.; and Cheryl (Ronald) Gunn-Henderson, Chicago; nine grandchildren, Raymond Gunn, Justin (Renee) Gunn, Nathaniel Henderson, Ronald Henderson Jr. and Ari Vactor, all of Chicago; Mercedes Culp-Lucas, Atlanta; Jordan (Laura Potts) Culp and Clayton Culp, all Knoxville, Tenn; and Shanee` Vactor-Tolbert, Gary, Ind.; five great-grandchildren, Jaydon, Leo, Christina, Renee and Cheyenne; a brother John Gunn, Chicago; and an uncle Howard (Geraldine) Lee, West Middlesex.

He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Walker and Malinda Lee Gunn; three brothers Luke Gunn, Charles Gunn, and Walker Gunn Jr.; and four sisters, Esther Williams, Cora Wilson, Mary Rozier and Ruth Gunn.


Joseph Sr., 89, Streamwood, Ill., formerly of the Shenango Valley.

Service: Funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday (8-6-13) in Second Baptist Church, 1138 Spearman Ave., Farrell. Wake will be at 10 a.m.

Burial: Morefield Cemetery, Hermitage.

Arrangements by J.E. WASHINGTON FUNERAL SERVICES, 1059 Hamilton Ave., Farrell.
