Evelyn Pickens Crosby

Mississippi native was active in Valley Baptist

---- — A funeral service will be held today for Evelyn Pickens Crosby of Hermitage, formerly of Wheatland and Farrell. She departed this life at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage, with her immediate family by her side. She was 85.

Mrs. Crosby was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Jasper County, Miss., a daughter of Elbert Pickens Sr. and Minerva Briggs Thompson Pickens.

On Sept. 19, 1945, she married Amos John Crosby Sr., and they settled in Wheatland.

At an early age, she devoted her life to Christ. As a devoted member of Valley Baptist Church, now Farrell, she served with Pastor’s Aid, the church vocal choir and women’s auxiliary group, and was a member of the Fabulous Rosaries gospel singing group.

She enjoyed gardening, seasonal decorating, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Crosby Sr., on Feb. 23, 2005.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, George, Albert, Robert, Elbert and Joe L.; and six sisters, Odessa, Annie Ruth, Sally Mae, Ruby, Flonett and Bernice.

She leaves to cherish her memories a sister, Betty Hosey, Youngstown; two sons, the Rev. Elbert L. Crosby and his wife Alison, Hermitage; and Amos J. Crosby Jr. and his wife Veronica, Thornton, Colo.; a daughter, Earlean Crosby-Dryer and her husband Joe, Sharon; eight grandchildren, Sonya, Launeice “Sissy,” Trinaty, Justin, Cherie, Sasha, Christina and Gwendolyn; and many nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. today in the church with the Rev. James L.R. Hosey, officiating, and the Rev. Elbert Lee Crosby, deceased’s son, as eulogist.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
