Richard Russell Wolfe

University prof, counselor had family in Hadley area

- — WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. – Richard Russell Wolfe of Golden, Colo., died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. He was 87.

Mr. Wolfe, known to his family as Russell and to his friends as Dick, was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Clearfield County, Pa., to Perry and Regina Holtshauer Wolfe.

He overcame a lot of obstacles in life. Born with medical issues, his parents feared he would not survive but he was nursed to health by his grandmother.

Following high school, he joined the military in order to pay for college, and made lifelong friendships with his Army buddies.

He earned his Ph.D. in 1964 at the University of Pittsburgh and went on to become a professor at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, in the area of rehabilitation counseling. He spent a lot of time at Craig Hospital in Colorado, working with patients and doctors during his tenure at the university. It was his mission in life to help people through life’s challenges, whether physical or financial.

Dick was married in 1969 and had two children, John and Christina. He loved his children and all of his grandchildren very much.

Dick left Greeley in 2008 to move close to his daughter and her family in Golden. He enjoyed his time with them immensely and always spoke with pride of his daughter and son, and his beautiful grandchildren, Jack, Peter, Tanner and Elsa.

Dick is survived by his son, John Wolfe, Ph.D., and his wife Kat and sons Jack and Peter. He is also survived by his daughter, Christina Vessely, Ph.D., and her husband Mark, son Tanner and daughter Elsa.

Mr. Wolfe also leaves family members in Hadley and surrounding areas.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Wounded Warriors Project, Att: Advanced Guard, Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675; or Craig Hospital Foundation, call 1-303-789-8208.

A funeral service will be held at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16,  at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, with a reception at his daughter’s house in Golden following the service.
