Elwyn ‘Sonny’ Sanders

Ex-Mercer County man helped to lead youth


VENICE, Fla. — Elwyn “Sonny” Sanders of Port Charlotte and Englewood, both Fla., passed away Friday morning, Dec. 13, 2013, in Tidewell Hospice Inc., Venice. He was 67.

Mr. Sanders was born in Grove City, lived in Wheatland and Sharon, and moved to Englewood in 1972.

Sonny was an employee of various utility systems, including the Englewood Water District, American Commonwealth, U.S. Utilities and Southeast Water as vice president of acquisitions and operations.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Sonny had a strong faith and was an active member of Englewood United Methodist Church and, later, Suncoast Worship Center, Englewood. Having a passion toward helping youth in the community, he guided them through his work and leadership in the youth groups of both congregations.

Sonny is survived by: his wife of 47 years, Sandy; two sons, Drew Sanders and his wife Loree; and Chris Sanders and his wife Charissa; two grandchildren, Mason and Brenyn; and siblings, David, Calvin and Sue.
