Fannie M. Chester

Former local gospel singer lived in Colo. since 1986

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fannie M. Chester, formerly of Farrell, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, in Colorado Springs. She was 73.

Mrs. Chester was born Sept. 27, 1940, in Huntsville, Ala., to Willie Walter Newby and Laura Mae Harden Newby.

She lived in Farrell for many years before moving in 1986 to Colorado Springs.

Fannie was a loving person and a woman of great faith who loved God with all of her heart.

She sang for many years with a local gospel group, the New Believers Gospel Singers, and before leaving the Shenango Valley was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Farrell. In Colorado, Fannie was a faithful member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Colorado Springs.

We are so grateful that she is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Fannie is survived by: a sister, Dorothy Newby Chester, Sharon; and four brothers, Robert E. Newby and Harvey Lee Newby, both Sharon; and Henry Newby, husband of Flora, and Robert B. “Bobby” Newby, all Hermitage.

Fannie’s legacy will live on through her five children, Felicia Newby, Yolanda “Lundie” Lewis, Renee Parker, Tracie Collins and her son, Robert “B” Smith Jr., all Colorado Springs.

She is also survived by: 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Lillie Mae Harden, Farrell; two sisters-in-law, Johnnie Newby, Sharon; and Patricia Newby, Erie; a godson, Robert N. Newby, also Sharon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Fannie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert James Smith Sr. and Robert C. Chester; her brothers, the Rev. Dr. William W. Newby and Larry D. Newby; sisters, Richetta Thomas, Brenda Reno, Geneva Newby and Suedale Newby; and a great-grandson, Tevion E. Williams.

Her funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, in Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, in Second Baptist Church, 10 Walnut St., Sharpsville. Immediately after the service, the family will meet in the home of Dorothy Chester, George Street, Sharon.
