Richard Marvin Struthers

Retired letter carrier was also lifelong farmer


- — Mr. Struthers was born Nov. 19, 1930 in Mercer, a son of William Kenneth and Francis Sidley Struthers.

He married Jane Eperthener Struthers, his wife of 62 years, on Oct. 20, 1951. She survives at the residence.

Mr. Struthers was a member of Mercer United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He served on various boards and taught Sunday school.

While he served in the Army, Mrs. Struthers was as map and firearms instructor. He was a lifelong farmer.

He retired from the United States Postal Service as a city letter carrier with 30 years’ service. He was a former president of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Mr. Struthers was a member of Jackson Grange. He  was a member for more than 50 years of Fredonia Lions Club. He was also a member of Hebron Lodge in Mercer and Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. He served on the Mercer County Extension Board of Directors.

Mr. Struthers helped to start the Mercer County Antique Power Association. He was a founding partner in Lakeview Fertilizer and a partner in Struthers Farm & Family Center. He was a member of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Struthers is survived by a daughter,  Mary Jane, wife of Larry Peters in Mercer; three sons: Barry Struthers and his wife Lisa; John Struthers and his wife Norma, Bruce Struthers and his wife Brenda, all of Mercer: two sisters: Virginia Taylor, of Greenville;         Bernice, wife of Ed Moore in San Diego, Calif.; two brothers: William Struthers and his wife Linda in Sandy Lake; and David Struthers and his wife Charlene in Los Angeles.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Matthew Peters; Christopher Peters and his wife Aimee; Laura and her husband John Minner; Ryan Struthers and his wife Stephanie; Stephanie and her husband Adam Raymond; Kenneth and his wife Rebecca Struthers; Shelley and her husband Seann Carfolo; Mark Struthers and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday (12-28-13) at Mercer United Methodist Church, 250 E. Butler St., Mercer, with the Rev. Eric Leonard, pastor, officiating.
