Albert J. ‘Jerry’ Wiesen

Sharon Steel worker active in union was St. Joe coach

- — Albert J. “Jerry” Wiesen, 448 S. Eighth St., Sharpsville, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 4:15 p.m. Saturday (12-28-13) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 73.

Mr. Wiesen was born Jan. 10, 1940, in Sharon, one of three children born to Paul John Wiesen and Helen C. Conlin Wiesen.

A lifelong area resident, he graduated from St. Joseph’s School in 1954 and Sharon High School in 1958.

Jerry, as he was known by his family and friends, worked at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant for more than 30 years. He worked from March 5, 1959, to October 1989, as a production clerk, shipping clerk, safety man and shipper in the 60-inch cold roll department.

He was an active member of the United Steel Workers Local 1197, serving on the negotiation committee and as a grievance man and financial secretary.

Jerry was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon.

In the 1960’s Jerry had a successful run as the head basketball coach at St. Joseph’s School. He started his coaching career with 44 straight victories in the Mercer County Parochial League over a three-year period. His 1966-67  team won the Erie Diocesan title and made it to the state parochial tournament held at St. Frances College, Loretta, Pa.

He belonged to the Sharpsville Football Boosters in years past.

His wife, the former Mary Ann Mineo, whom he married Sept. 29, 1962, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, passed away June 8, 2010.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Ann Wiesen, Shelby, N.C.; and Carol Ann Wiesen McCurdy and her husband William, Winthrop, Mass.; three sons, Paul J. Wiesen and his wife Jane, Melrose, Mass.; Michael J. Wiesen and his wife Jodi, Georgetown; and Thomas J. Wiesen and his wife Darcy, Sharpsville; 12 grandchildren, Thomas J. “TJ” Wiesen II, Annemarie, Edward “Ted,” Tim, Tyler, Daniel, twins Marissa and Matthew, Peter, Andrew and Robert Wiesen and Grace Lillian McCurdy; a brother, Eugene P. Wiesen and his wife Genevieve Mastrian Wiesen, Hermitage; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Vorhaben, Houston; and Anthony Mineo and his wife Judy Babinka Mineo, Sharon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rosemary Vorhaben; his mother- and father-in-law, Joseph and Grace Mineo; and two sisters-in-law, Caroline and Jean Mineo.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Joseph’s Church 79 Case Ave. Sharon. 16146.

Service: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday (1-2-14) in St. Joseph Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Jason Glover and Rev. Glenn R. Whitman concelebrating.

Burial: With his wife in St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
