Carolyn Jean Miller Roberts

Wife of pastor, H&R Block worker served in groups

- — FLORENCE, S.C. – A funeral service will be held Saturday for Carolyn Jean Miller Roberts of 413 Darr Ave., Farrell. She passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, in Florence. She was 66.

Mrs. Roberts was born Sept. 3, 1947, in Farrell to Nelson and Mamie L. Canty Miller.

A 1966 alumna of Farrell High School, she majored in business administration and graduated from Youngstown State University. She completed studies in computer science at what is now Mercer County Career Center and attended school in Youngstown for the past 17 years in H&R Block Tax Service’s enrolled agent course.

She was currently employed for the past 20 years with H&R Block and previously worked in the payroll department of the former Treasure Island department store in Hermitage.

Until her marriage on May 7, 1983, to the Rev. Richard L. Roberts, Carolyn was a member of Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Farrell, where she held several positions, including superintendent of Sunday school; secretary of the Harriett B. Wright Missionary Society; directress of the church youth choir; and pianist and organist for the church and choir.

In 1983, she joined her husband and became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, New Castle, where she served as president of the board of Christian education, which presented seminars for life living and school growth for young people. She was vice president of its deaconess board, teacher of the junior class, assistant church clerk and performed the duties of first lady.

As a member of Valley Baptist Church, Farrell, she served as a deaconess and attended the ladies Sunday school class; and was president of the educational committee, which awarded scholarships to full-time college students. She served as first lady of that church during the pastorship of her husband, the Rev. Richard L. Roberts.

Carolyn belonged to many fraternal and civic organizations and served on several boards of directors. She was a life member of the Mercer County Branch of NAACP; belonged to Zylphia Temple No. 66 Daughter of Elks, Farrell; and was a past daughter ruler of Northwest Pennsylvania Council. She was a past worthy matron of Miriam Chapter 47 of Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliation, Farrell, having begun membership May 7, 1968, and serving as treasurer from Jan. 17, 1978, to the present.

In Deborah Grand Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliation Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, she served for six years as District 8 lecturer, two years as District 8 deputy grand matron, grand chaplain and assistant chaplain for 19 years, and participated in the Revival Emphasis Committee and many other committees in that organization.

In 1967, Greater Morris Chapel declared a day to honor her, Carolyn Jean Miller Day. She received a plaque for exemplary service to the Eastern Star July 21, 1981; and on April 14, 1984, was awarded the Community Service Award from Mercer County Club Frontiers International for dedicated and unselfish service for the betterment of the community.

Carolyn was a charter member of M.E.T. Carroll Assembly No. 62 Order of the Golden Circle organized in July 1972 in the Valley of Erie. She served well, holding all offices assigned to her, until in 2007 when she was elected to the position of the State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler of the Grand Assembly for the state, a position she held until 2008, and later becoming treasurer of M.E.T. She served as director of the Hazel Datcher Scholarship Fund and most recently was State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler of the Pennsylvania State Grand Assembly. On Nov. 8, 2009, Pennsylvania State Grand Assembly Order of the Golden Circle presented a plaque to her for dedicated and outstanding service as State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler.
