Rita Cordelia Hamel Karing

St. Joe’s member was honored by papacy


- — Funeral Mass will be Tuesday for Rita Cordelia Hamel Karing of Sharon, who passed away at 9:30 a.m. Thursday (1-2-14) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 82.

Mrs. Karing was born Dec. 11, 1931, in Youngs-town, a daughter of Omar and Sarah Sheridian Hamel.

She attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School in Sharon and was a 1949 graduate of Sharon High School.

Rita was a homemaker and an involved member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, where she served as head of the food pantry for 22 years. She also served on the St. Joseph’s liturgy committee and parish council and was a eucharistic minister.

Rita was a 2000 Buhl Day Honoree for her work with the St. Joseph’s Food Pantry; and in 2006 she received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope Benedict XVI, the highest award given to laity by the papacy.

Rita’s hobbies included painting, reading and woodcrafts.

She also enjoyed spending time with her friends, family and grandchildren.

Surviving are: her husband of 64 years, James A. Karing, whom she married Aug. 11, 1950; four children, Kathleen Serb, Hermitage; James E. Karing and his wife Julie, Mogadore, Ohio; and Daniel Karing and Jan McKinney and her husband Bill, all Sharon; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Lawrence, Christian, Breanne and her husband Michael Stephan, Caitlin, Sarah and her husband Viktor Poor, and Tyler and his wife Heather; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Cassandra.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Florence Munson.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Joseph Church Food Pantry, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
