Nicholas James Connelly

Retired parochial school teacher was musician

- — Nicholas James Connelly of Sharpsville passed away at 10:04 p.m. Tuesday (12-31-13) in his residence. He was 67.

Mr. Connelly was born May 18, 1946, in Sharon, a son of John A. and Cora Young Connelly.

A 1964 graduate of Sharpsville High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and was a magna cum laude graduate of George Mason University, Fairfax, Va., with a master of fine arts degree in baroque guitar.

Nick lived in the Washington, D.C., area for 20 years, where he was a manager for a courier company. He returned to the area in 2000 and retired from the former Monsignor Geno Monti Parochial Grade School, Farrell, where he was a seventh-grade teacher.

He previously was the music director at Kennedy Catholic High School, Hermitage, and served as a policeman for the City of Sharon for five years.

Music was Nick’s life.

He formed several bands years ago and later entertained residents in nursing homes in Pennsylvania and Virginia. He taught guitar lessons at Mark’s Music, Hermitage, and mentored many young aspiring guitarists.

He was a member of the musicians’ union and the Associates of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Nick was a gentle soul who also loved animals and will be dearly missed by his loving family.

Surviving are: two sisters, Alice Connelly, at home; and Anne Hill and her husband Ted, Pickerington, Ohio; a brother, Patrick Connelly, Southport, N.C.; a daughter, Katy Slater and her husband Tim, Fredonia; two grandchildren, James and Jordan Slater; six nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Myrna Connelly, Port Neches, Texas.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John A. Connelly Jr. and Terence Connelly; his wife, Lou Anne Grady; a nephew, John A. Connelly III; and a sister-in-law, Carla Connelly.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121.
