Louis Marney Nicastro

Educator was inducted into FHS Hall of Fame

- — Mr. Nicastro was born July 23, 1922, in Niles, a son of Lorenzo and Theresa Covino Nicastro.

Louis was a 1940 graduate of Farrell High School and a 1949 graduate of Westminster College, New Wilmington, with a master’s degree in business.

He taught at Youngstown South and Chaney High schools where he developed the Co-Operative Office Education programs with more than 300 members. Louis also taught business courses at Youngstown College and Youngstown State University.

Mr. Nicastro was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the 113th Calvary, 125th Reconnaissance Squad, who along with his armored car crew, led the two-day invasion with Gen. George Patton from St. Lo, France, to Paris. He received many medals for his service during the war.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles. He started the first boys basketball team for Mt. Carmel School and was a Niles Little League baseball manager.

He was an avid traveler and led tours around the world for Youngstown AAA.

His favorite hobby and passion was singing. He especially enjoyed singing with the Westminster College Alumni Chorus, Youngstown Symphony, Girard Concert and Swingtime band. He started singing in the 1940s and palled around with Frank Sinatra, who provided him coaching and several singing opportunities. He recorded several CDs of big band hits and singing appearances with the Top Notes and Smoothies.

His past memberships include American Legion Post 160 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, both Farrell; Youngstown Education Association and Mahoning and Youngstown Retired Teachers Association. He was recently inducted into the Farrell Area School District Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Josephine Infante Nicastro, whom he married Aug. 26, 1950; a son, Lawrence Nicastro and a daughter, Marnie Nicastro, both Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Kira Nicastro and Kristin Nicastro; a brother, Pat Nicastro and his wife Marie, Brookfield; two sisters, Anne White, Sharpsville; and Jane Hudak and her husband Robert, Venice, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Pete Julian, Brookfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Eleanor Julian.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Niles, with the Rev. John-Michael Lavelle as celebrant, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service in the funeral home.

Burial: Niles City Cemetery where Louis will be honored for his military service by the Girard Veterans Council Honor Guard.
