Bernice Marie Bell Erb

WM native loved singing, was active in community


---- — Bernice Marie Bell Erb died at 9:26 p.m. Aug. 9, 2013, in River Region Medical Center, Vicksburg, Miss., surrounded by family and friends. She was 87.

Born Nov. 1, 1925, in West Middlesex, Mrs. Erb was the youngest child of Russell Dilley Bell and Nina Lucille Ellison Bell.

Mrs. Erb graduated valedictorian of the class of 1943 at West Middlesex High School.

She married Edward E. Erb in November 1946. She worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and loved singing with the Jim Headley Band, Westinghouse Chorus, and with her uncle, William “Kappy” Ellison, at USO and other events in the area.

As a result of her husband’s job transfers, the family moved to Bay Village, Ohio. in 1955, to Vicksburg in 1966 and back to Ohio in 1968. They moved back to Vicksburg in 1975. In each of these locations, she was active in church and civic activities. She was a member of Porter’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  

Mrs. Erb was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Edward Edeburn Erb; her parents; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Bell Hoffman and Janet Kathryn Bell Garrett.  

She is survived by a son, Edward E. Erb Jr. and his wife Kathy, Scottsdale, Ariz; a daughter, Sandra E. Evans and her husband Arthur, Vicksburg; six grandchildren, Edward E. Erb III, Carrie Ann Erb Igondjo, Melissa Lynn Birdsong Stockton, Robert David Birdsong, Jeanice L. Evans Skipper and A. Jeanelle Evans Caraway; six great-grandchildren, Anique Kathleen Igondjo, Alynne Jeanne Igondjo, Indigo Valo Stockton, Stacy Alden Skipper, Maralee Grace Skipper and Gabrielle Grace Caraway.

Calling hours: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday (8-18-13) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 3126 Main St., West Middlesex.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday (8-19-13) in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Edward Erb Jr., Arthur Evans, Edward Erb III, Robert Birdsong and Butch Garrett.

Burial: Haywood Cemetery, West Middlesex.
