Robert J. Brown Sr.

Sharon Steel retiree was farmer, liked to hunt, fish

- — Robert J. Brown Sr. of  Shenango Township died at 5:28 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, in Juniper Village, Sharon, with his family by his side. He was 88.

Robert was born March 11, 1926, in Huntingdon, Pa., a son of Florence L. (Liebal) Brown and Hammond Brown.

Robert attended Huntingdon High School.

He served in the Army during the end of World War II, from 1946 to 1948.

He worked for Sharon Steel for 33 years as a millwright and retired in 1991. He also was a dairy and beef farmer in West Middlesex, Mercer and Huntingdon.

Robert had been a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, since 1957, when the church  opened.

He was a former member of the Steel Workers Union and belonged to Sharon Steel Retirees.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing for trout and hunting pheasants. He also enjoyed going to his hunting camp, going to casinos, and he enjoyed animals, especially his German shorthair pointer dogs. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are: his wife, Marjorie L. Brown, at home, whom he married Nov. 18, 1950; his children, Deborah Backo and her husband George, Erie; Robert J. Brown Jr. and his wife Roxanne, Meadville; and Susan Thompson and her husband Steven, Hermitage; his grandchildren, Vincent Brown, Adam Backo, Katherine Creed and her husband Matthew, and Alie Thompson; and a daughter-in-law, Darlene Brown of Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Vincent Brown; and a brother, Richard Brown.

Funeral: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday (3-18-14) in Church of the Good Shepherd, 3613 Sharon Road, West Middlesex, with Monsignor Robert Malene as celebrant. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church for Mass. Following the Mass, there will be full military honors provided by the Shenango Valley Honor Guard.

Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
