Irene C. Gedeon

Greenville woman was Secular Franciscan member


- — Irene C. Gedeon, of 9 N. Penn Ave., Greenville, passed away tragically Thursday evening (3-20-14) in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, as a result of a pedestrian accident in Greenville. She was 89.

She was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Pittsburgh to John A. and Leaettea C. Dieterle-Schneider Gedeon. She was a graduate of Sheakleyville High School. She had been employed as a beautician instructor in Pittsburgh and had also worked as a beautician at Mercy Hospital. In 1975 Irene moved to Greenville, and for more than 10 years she was employed at White Cliff Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide.

She was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Greenville, where she served as Eucharistic Minister, was a member of Young At Heart and helped with the selling of tickets for the annual church car raffle. For her many years of dedicated service to the church she received an appreciation award at the church’s annual Appreciation Dinner. For the past 51 years Irene was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order where she has served as the treasurer and the formation director. She was a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Center in Greenville and was very supportive of her fellow residents at the high rise. Irene very much loved reading and working on jigsaw puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John W. Gedeon and his wife Mary and two sisters, Leaettea Gedeon and Betty Hurlbut and a dear friend, Alice Ohle.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Ann Christy and her husband Kendall of Medford, Ore.; a brother-in-law George Gedeon of Pittsburgh and many loving nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
