George Ondich

Bronze Star recipient retired from Sharon Steel

- — George Ondich, a lifelong resident of Masury who lived for 70 years at 1608 Stateline Road SE, went home to heaven at 10:45 p.m. Monday evening, March 24, 2014, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 96.

Mr. Ondich was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Masury, and was the last surviving child of John and Anna Balla Ondich.

He attended Hubbard schools for nine years and graduated in 1935 from Brookfield High School.

Mr. Ondich proudly served his country in the Army during World War II as a sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Bronze Star. After his tour of duty, he was involved in the Civilian Conservation Camp.

Mr. Ondich retired in September 1975 after 36 years of employment at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where he was a heater in the 24-inch hotmill.

He was a member of Chestnut Ridge Church of God, Hubbard Township.

His wife, the former Irene Cerbus, whom he married April 27, 1946, died May 17, 1980.

He is survived by his sons, Tim Ondich, Masury; and David Ondich and his wife Lena, Minneapolis, Minn.; his daughter, Martha and her husband Nick Yurko, Juneau, Alaska; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Mr. Ondich was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Arthur Ondich; his four brothers, John, Andrew, Stephen and William Ondich; and two sisters, Helen Aikens and Lydia Midland.

Calling hours: Family will receive callers from 10 a.m. to time of service Thursday (3-27-14) in Chestnut Ridge Church of God, Hubbard Township.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church with the Rev. Robert J. McFarland, senior pastor, officiating.

Burial: Next to his wife with full military honors in Union Cemetery, Hubbard.
