Peter Michael Ghiates

Insurance agent served on The Arc board


- — Peter Michael Ghiates of Hermitage passed away at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in his home, after a courageous 2 1/2-year battle with cancer. He was 56.

Mr. Ghiates was born May 29, 1957, in Grove City, a son of Dr. Michael P. Ghiates and Tommye I. Stoyco Ghiates.

He was a 1975 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage, and received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University.

Peter began his career as a nursing home administrator and later changed his career path to become a successful insurance agent.

He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon, and attended Grace Chapel Community Church, Hermitage, where he played the guitar in its worship team.

Peter served on the board of directors for The Arc of Mercer County and was a member of American Legion Post 299, Sharon, and the Farrell Sportsman Club.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing and going to camp with his friends in Allegheny Forest.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and beloved dogs.

Surviving are: his wife of nearly 33 years, the former Terri Lee Hough; two sons, Michael Peter Ghiates and Kyle Evan Ghiates; a sister, Julie Joseph; and a brother, Christopher Ghiates and his wife Barbara, all Hermitage. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Mary Hough, also Hermitage; a sister- and brother-in-law, Mary Criss and Fred Garrett, New Wilmington; a brother-in-law, Evan Hough, Greenville; an aunt and uncle; and a niece, nephews and cousins.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Evan Hough.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 263 E. State St., or Sharon Regional Health System Hospice Home Care, 32 Jefferson Ave., Suite 205, both Sharon, PA 16146; or Grace Chapel Community Church, 4075 Lamor Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
