Edna (Galica) Garstka

Massachusetts native was Notre Dame member


---- — Edna (Galica) Garstka, John XXIII Home, Hermitage, formerly of Chicopee, Mass., passed away peacefully Thursday, April 25, 2013 in her room of natural causes. She was 90.

Mrs. Garstka was born on November 3, 1922 in Chicopee, Mass., a daughter of Walter and Victoria (Padykula) Galica.

She lived most of her life in Chicopee and attended local schools. She was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr.  

Edna married Alphonse Garstka in 1946 and worked as a seamstress until she moved in with her daughter, Linda and son-in-law, Ted after her husband’s death in 1985.  She then became part of the “Daigneault traveling circus,” moving to homes in North Attleboro, Mass., North Hampton, N.H. and finally to Sharon.

Edna was a communicant of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. She loved being with her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edna will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ted Daigneault, Sharon and her granddaughters, Jessica Sloan and her husband, Scott, Hermitage, and Theresa Scott and her husband, Bob, Mount Juliet, Tenn.

“Babci,” as she was known by her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jacob, Lucas and Brenna Rae, was overjoyed to be with them and hear about their “adventures.” Edna was blessed to have her loving family around her and the wonderful care and concern of the staff, nurses and aides at John XXIII Home. Thank you for all you do.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Stanley Galica; and her infant grandson, Christopher.

Interment: St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Hermitage, with a liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
