Homer N. Gibson Sr.

Home builder, insurance salesman was Scout leader

---- — Homer N. Gibson Sr. of Hermitage passed away peacefully at 5 a.m. Sunday (5-5-13) in Nugent’s Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. He was 87.

Mr. Gibson was born June 11 1925 in Renfrew, Butler County, to Theodore and Bertha Schrieber Gibson.

He attended Butler schools and in 1943 joined the Merchant Marine, serving as a radio officer during World War II.

After he returned home from the war he married Dorothy Wheaton Gibson on Oct. 22, 1946. Dorothy survives at home.

Mr. Gibson worked as a general contractor, building homes in the area, and later as an insurance salesman.

He was also an active member of Clark Trinity Methodist Church.

His real passion was with children. Aside from raising his own two children, he volunteered his time to drive a school bus for the former Hickory School District in the 1950s and 1960s, and was very active with Boy Scouts of America.

Beginning in 1953 when he joined the Scouts in Sharon, he went on to found Clark Troop 7 in 1968, based at Clark Trinity Methodist Church, and helped more than 100 Eagle Scouts attain their goals.

Several of his Eagle Scouts are the second generation to be taught by him.

Mr. Gibson always had time for his Scouts. If there was an activity he enjoyed, whether it was golfing or skiing or bowling, he always had his Scouts with him.

He touched many lives and will always be remembered for his kindness and selflessness.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, Dorothy, at home; two children, Mr. H. Nicholas Gibson Jr., Hermitage; and Ms. Cathy Smith, Sharon; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gertrude Worth, Butler; and Nancy Fisher and Sally McCormick, both Hadley; and a brother, George Gibson and his wife Shirley, Hermitage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Theodore Gibson, who was killed in action during World War II; and a younger brother, Leslie Gibson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1046, Hermitage, PA 16148
