Masury truck driver earned Million Mile Award


---- — Richard “Richie” W. Gerdy, Masury, passed away at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, following a sudden illness, in Orlando (Fla.) Hospital. He was 72.

Richard was born on Feb. 15, 1941, a son to Michael and Rose Dunch Gerdy in Sharon. He graduated from Sharon High School, class of 1959. Richard worked as a truck driver for Preston Trucking for 13 years until his retirement in 1998. He married Betty M. Marrie on August 11, 1962, who survives at home.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Roman Catholic Church in Sharpsville. Richard was awarded the Million Mile Award from Preston Truck Driving for a total of 34 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, and family reunions at his home. Richard was a member of the Greenville Moose Lodge 276, Sharpsville VFW Post 6404, and was very active at Yankee Lake in various activities where he was well known for his association with the organization.

Richard is survived by his loving spouse Betty; two daughters, Ann M. Sowers, Hubbard; Susan E. (Jeffery) Porterfield, Hartford; a son, John M. (Laurie) Gerdy, Hartford; a brother, Lawrence (Dorothy) Gerdy, Hermitage; two granddaughters, Shauna Gerdy; Macie Sowers; and a grandson, Brandon Porterfield.

He was preceded in death by father, Michael Gerdy and mother, Rose Gerdy.

Calling hours: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (5-14-13) at DONALDSON-MOHNEY FUNERAL HOME, 124 Main St., Sharpsville.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday (5-15-13) at the funeral home, with Father Marc Stockton officiating. Family is welcoming friends to Yankee Lake for refreshments and fellowship following Wednesday services.

Interment: St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
