Evelyn H. Walsh

Liberty schools educator taught in retirement

---- — Evelyn H. Walsh of Hubbard passed away peacefully at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in O’Brien Memorial Nursing Home in Masury, surrounded by her family. She was 87.

Mrs. Walsh was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of George and Ann Lazorchak Kokinakis.

Evelyn was a 1943 graduate of Allegheny High School and a 1966 alumna of Youngstown State University, matriculating cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education. She obtained her master’s degree in 1971.

For 25 years, she was a dedicated teacher in the Liberty (Township) School System, Trumbull County, and encouraged her students to love learning.

Evelyn was selected as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar for Excellence in Teaching in 1978 and 1979. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a past treasurer and served as a delegate to the DKG convention. She also belonged to the Liberty Education Association, Ohio Educational Association and the National Education Association.

After her retirement, she was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and volunteered to teach English to foreign students at the International Institute.

She traveled extensively, including trips to Japan, Singapore and Europe, and enjoyed attending the Cultural Alliance of Youngstown.

She was a voracious reader who shared her love of reading with many students.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Jack H. Walsh, whom she married July 26, 1946, Hubbard; her son, Jeffrey A. Walsh and his wife Janet, Houston; her daughter, Diane and her husband Terumitsu Sasaki, Tokyo; five grandchildren, Brooke, Daisy, Clayton, Tad and his wife Ellie; and Megumi; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Adrian.

She also leaves her sister, Frances Mineo, Mount Lebanon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Kokinakis and George Kokinakis Jr.; and her sisters, Elaine Riemenschneider and Beatrice Lamprinakos.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
