Josephine “Jo” D. Toth of John XXIII Home, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 5:27 p.m. Monday (4-1-13) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 87 and formerly resided on Service Avenue, Sharon.
Mrs. Toth was born April 22, 1925, in Farrell to James A. and Margaret Paule Cione.
A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Sharon High School in 1943. Upon her mother’s untimely death, when Jo was just 17, she cared for four younger brothers and baby sister while sharing her grandparents’ home.
She married John A. Toth on July 15, 1961, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. He died Oct. 21, 1988.
Josephine was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon.
In her early years, she was active in Shenango Valley Junior Women’s Club and Shenango Valley Theater Guild. She also was a hospital volunteer at the former Buhl Hospital, now Sharon Regional Health System, and worked at the former Sharon Store downtown. For 12 years, she was a bookkeeper for the former Flower Lumber Co., Sharon. She then worked as the payroll clerk for Sharon City School District for 34 years, retiring In 1992.
She is survived by a sister, Sherrill “Sugar” Moss; and two brothers, Robert J. Cione and his wife Peggy; and Gerald A. Cione, all Hermitage.
Affectionately named “Gaga” by her nieces, the nickname has endured with family and friends. Although having no children of her own, Jo considered her nieces as her grandchildren and their children as great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are Amanda Ruffo and her husband Corey and sons Clay and Cole, Mercer; Malinda Moses and her husband Anthony and children, Autumn and Lex, Hermitage; and Megan Pfadt and her husband Garrett and daughters Slade and Brynle, Hermitage.
Also surviving are nephews, Brett Cione, New York City; and Jamie Cione and family, Walden, N.Y.; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Cione and Gail Cione, both Sharon. Several stepnieces and stepnephews also survive.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James “Wayne” Cione, in 2002; and Conrad “Bobo” Cione, in 1984.
