Charles T. Fisher

Retired firefighter was avid model railroader

- — Charles T. Fisher, Sharon, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at 8:40 p.m. Saturday (2-22-14) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 84.

Charles was born in Sharon on May 5, 1929, one of two sons born to William T. and Carolyn Rowe Fisher.

He was a 1947 graduate of Sharon High School where he was a standout player for the Tigers basketball team.

A decorated veteran, he served during the Korean conflict with the U.S. Army and reached the rank of master sergeant. He was part of a garrison at the Panama Canal that was assigned to maintain American control of this strategically important area. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

He was a fireman for the city of Sharon for 27 years. After retiring from the fire department he worked for Leo’s Cigarette Service, Sharon, and its successor M&G Cigarette Service, Brookfield.

A member of St. Joseph’s Church in Sharon, he was also a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 684, Sharon.

He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

He enjoyed bowling and he loved camping and fishing with his family at the YMCA campgrounds along the shores of the Shenango River Lake in years past.

Charles’ passion was model railroading and he was a member of the Train Collectors Association.

He was an active member of the AARP.

His wife, the former Janice C. Zimmer, who he married Dec. 2, 1950, survives at home.

He also leaves a daughter, Sharon Lynn Wolfgang and her husband Bill, Point of Rocks, Md.; two sons, Edward W. “Ted” Fisher and his wife Cathleen, Transfer, and Timothy C. Fisher and his wife Rosette, Longs, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, H. Ralph Fisher and his wife Phyllis, South Pymatuning Township; and a sister-in-law, Ada Lou Zimmer, Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, Edward N. Zimmer Sr. and Julia Zimmer; a brother-in-law, Edward N. Zimmer Jr.; and a nephew, Larry Fisher.
