David Frederick ‘Moe’ Hoagland Sr.

Decorated war veteran worked at Westinghouse

- — A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday for David Frederick “Moe” Hoagland Sr., a resident of John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, formerly of Memorial Boulevard and South Myers Avenue, both Sharon. He passed away of natural causes at 3:35 p.m. Monday (2-24-14) in the home. He was 90.

Mr. Hoagland was born Nov. 18, 1923, in what was then Hickory Township, a son of Clarence and Ruby Goodall Hoagland.

He was a member of Hickory High School’s graduating class of 1942.

Moe, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, worked for 42 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a tube system manager in maintenance.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon.

Moe enjoyed a good round of golf and belonged to both the Shenango Valley and Westinghouse golf leagues in years past. He also enjoyed bowling.

As a decorated war veteran, he served with the Army in France in the European theater of operations during World War II. He was honorably discharged with several medals and citations including the Purple Heart for injuries received in battle.

His wife, the former Maxine Knowles, whom he married Sept. 3, 1949, passed away this past year on Oct. 25, 2013.

He leaves: his daughter, Janice Hoagland Krueger and her husband Doug, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three sons, David Hoagland Jr. and his wife Mary, Kingman, Ariz.; Dennis Hoagland and his wife Sandra, Boynton Beach, Fla.; and Darryl Hoagland, Lake Worth, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brian Hoagland, Harley Hoagland and Eric McDonald; a great-granddaughter, Brianna Hoagland; and his brother, Allen “Happy” Hoagland, New Wilmington.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Hoagland; two brothers, Robert and William Van Hoagland; and a sister, Eleanor Hoagland Sentman.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Jason Glover as celebrant. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for the church.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage, with full military honors provided by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.
