Harrison L. ‘Buster’ Smith

B&LE retiree, Sheakleyville fair co-chair did repairs

---- — Harrison L. “Buster” Smith of 471 Stevenson Road, Greenville, passed away at 1 p.m. Thursday (2-7-13) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 80.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 10, 1933, in Greenville to Vinton L. and Marie Dick Smith.

He was a 1952 graduate of the former Penn High School, Greenville.

Mr. Smith worked for more than 40 years for Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, retiring as a foreman on a line gang. He also operated, along with Dale Conn, an electrical repair business for more than 60 years.

An Army veteran, he served as a sergeant in the Signal Corps from 1951-53 with duty in Georgia and New Mexico.

Mr. Smith was a member of North Salem United Methodist Church, Greenville, and was a member and past treasurer of the Commodore Perry Lions Club, Hadley, receiving the Melvin Jones Award, and was a Fellow of the Pennsylvania Lions Foundation.

He was co-chairman of Sheakleyville Homecoming for more than 30 years and belonged to Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Smith was past Cub Scout master for Pack 78 of Hadley and was Santa Claus to hundreds of children and seniors in the area.

He enjoyed working summers with his cotton candy wagon at fairs and was an avid gardener.

Buster and his wife, the former Sally Peters, whom he married Dec. 26, 1953, traveled winters in the Southwest for more than 30 years. She survives at home.

Besides his wife, surviving are: three sons, R. Wayne Smith and his wife Kim, Sandy Lake; Dennis A. Smith and his wife Lisa, Chickasha, Okla.; and Gary L. Smith and his wife Melissa, Greenville; a brother, Thomas E. Smith and his wife Carol; and a sister, Elaine M. Riley, all also Greenville; his grandchildren, Capt. Julie A. Smith, S.Sgt. Treg M. Smith and Seaman Tyler C. Smith; and a stepgrandson, Zach Baxter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Homer Riley.

Calling hours: 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday (2-10-13) and 10 a.m. to time of service Monday (2-11-13) in ANDREW J. VANA FUNERAL HOME, 102 Church St., Hadley. A Lions Necrology service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Marshall, pastor of North Salem Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment: Stevenson Cemetery, Salem Township.
