Michael Joseph Chuey Jr.

Sawhill retiree served in Army National Guard

---- — Michael Joseph Chuey Jr. of Sharon, passed away Sunday (7-21-13) in his residence after an extended illness. He was 77.

Mr. Chuey was born March 12, 1936, in Monroe, Mich., to Michael Joseph Chuey Sr. and Mary Dolores Welsh Chuey.

He grew up in Austintown, Ohio, and attended Austintown Fitch High School, where he excelled at gymnastics and football.

He and his family moved to Brookfield, where they opened and ran the Chuey’s Sunoco Gas Station on old Route 82.

He served in the Army National Guard from 1953 to 1961 in the 37th Division, 147th Infantry Regiment, 92 Combat Support Team as a 4.2-inch mortarman and a cook. He worked at Sawhill/A.K. Steel for nearly 20 years until he was forced to retire for medical reasons.

Fiercely patriotic, Mr. Chuey supported the U.S. military and their families. His hobbies included collecting military and police shoulder patches, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Browns, NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon, and Boise State and Notre Dame football, and listening to old- time radio and Western and military audio books.

He loved to draw and loved his two dogs, Misty and Carrie. He and his father raised and showed rabbits for several years.

A dedicated family man, he displayed countless pictures of his family throughout the house and most of all, loved to be around his family.

He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, the former Judith Ann Shuttleworth; his sons, Michael W. and his wife Jennifer, Kalispell, Mont.; and Daniel D. and his wife Letty, Cleveland; two sisters, Janice Fry and her husband Pete, Hubbard; and Denise Baldine, Vienna, Ohio; four grandchildren, Sarah Pettibone, Heather Chuey, Billy Chuey and Leah Chuey; and three great-grandchildren, Kadence and Rylin Pettibone; and Kayden Chuey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Wounded Warrior Project, Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675; or Cancer Care Center, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
