Valeria Rae ‘Bummy’ Bires

Service station co-owner later worked at KCHS

-----

---- — A brief memorial service will be held Sunday for Valeria Rae “Bummy” Bires of Volant. She passed away at 3:19 a.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, in the home of her daughter, Gerri Stitt and her husband Larry, after an extended illness. Previously she made her home with her daughter Linda Bires and husband Roy Guy of Volant. She was 87.

Mrs. Bires was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Sharon to Sylvester and Eva Zoashn Marion.

She attended Addison School in Brookfield.

She and her sisters were owner-operators of the Wheatland Atlantic Service Station from 1956 to the late 1970s. Later, she worked at the former Treasure Island department store, Hermitage, and ended her working career at Kennedy Christian High School, Hermitage, where she made lifetime friends and was loved by all.

For the last 15 years, she was known to everyone as Bummy, a name she was given by the three grandchildren she lived her life for, Lindsay, Chelsea and Molly.

In her younger days, she liked to bowl and golf. She loved to go to the casino and play the slots with her best friends and family.

She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. Bummy was the West Middlesex girls basketball team’s biggest fan; to the Dean Dairy Bluebirds, she will always be known as Bluebird Bummy.

Her husband, Walter Lado Bires, whom she married July 20, 1946, passed away in 1993.

Surviving are: two daughters, Gerri L. Stitt and her husband Larry, West Middlesex; and Linda R. Bires and her husband Roy Guy, Volant; and a son, Donald Bires and his wife Linda, Florida. She was a loving grandmother to Gerri’s three daughters, Lindsay, Chelsea and Molly Stitt. Her grandchildren from her son, Donald, were not seen often, but thought about always. They are: Lori, Austin, Krisdee, Malissa and Miranda.

She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Anna Marion; an infant brother, John Marion; three sisters, Anna Bires, Mary Yonek and Florence Bertolasio; and two brothers, John Marion and Clement “Kelly” Marion.

Bummy was also preceded in death by a nephew, Paul Moldovan; a great-nephew, Robert “Bobby” Cupan; and a niece, Cindy Perry.

She took on the role of grandmother to every kid she met. Bummy was a wonderful woman who had a smile on her face to everyone she saw, even through her last days of pain. She is in pain no more and at peace in heaven.
