A private funeral service will be held Saturday for Alvin Jay “A.J.” Schell of Grove City. He passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, 2013, in his home. He was 91.
Known by most throughout his life as A.J., Mr. Schell was born May 4, 1922, in Deland, Fla., to Alvin J. Schell Sr. and Lucille Ione Bashline Schell.
A.J. moved to Grove City with his parents in 1934. He graduated from Grove City High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Grove City College.
Mr. Schell served in the Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1944.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, and served several terms on its board of trustees.
He also served on the board of directors of what was formerly known as United Community Hospital, as president 1978-80 and 1984-88, as well as on the board of directors with First Seneca Bank and later Integra Bank.
He was active in Boy Scouts of America, not only as a Scoutmaster but also as a member of French Creek Council.
A.J. spent his entire professional career with the W.M. Bashlin Co., taking over the family business from his father and grandfather in 1944. Now known as Bashlin Industries, he remained there well into his 80s.
He was an accomplished equestrian and avid outdoorsman.
A.J. will be remembered as a man who touched many people with his quiet, assured presence and humble demeanor.
He married June A. Winder on Oct. 11, 1944.
Survivors include: his wife, June A. Schell, at home; a daughter, Nancy S. Purcell and her husband Jack, Hilton Head, S.C.; sons, Donald L. Schell, Grove City; William “Bill” Schell and his wife Stacy, Englewood, Fla.; and Robert E. Schell and his wife Richelle, Mercer; and a grandson, Conner Schell, also Mercer.
A.J. was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, William Benton Schell.
