Robert 'Gung' Dillon

VMI retiree traveled with wife, drove school buses

SHARON — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Robert ‘Gung’ Dillon of Brookfield. He passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Monday morning, Oct. 14, 2013, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 76 years old.

Mr. Dillon was born Oct. 20, 1936, in Sharon, a son of Fred I. and Mary Ellen Griffin Dillon.

Gung was a 1954 graduate of Sharon High School.

Soon after, he married his sweetheart, Ruth Butler, on April 23, 1956, after which they began their more than 57-year journey together.

Bob worked for the former Valley Mould and Iron Inc. (V.M.I.) in Hubbard, beginning first in the mailroom, working his way to become a bookkeeper and then on to be a manager in the accounting department before his retirement with more than 30 years of service.

He was secretary of V.M.I. retirees group and following his retirement, drove school buses for Brookfield Local School District for 10 years.

Bob and Ruth traveled together in their motor home to many destinations across the United States and Canada. They had also taken a tour of Europe.

When at home, he had been active in several area golf leagues and held various positions in bowling leagues at Thornton Hall Lanes, Sharon, and Bell Wick Lanes, Hubbard.

He survived by: his beloved wife, Ruth; and two sons, Robert H. Dillon and Gary A. Dillon, all Brookfield; three grandsons, Robert J. Dillon, Gary E. Dillon and Patrick M. Dillon; a granddaughter, Rachel N. Dillon; a sister-in-law, Denise Dillon; five nieces, Jodi and her husband Jody Sucharski; Janell Dresel, Paula Dillon; Amy and her husband Frank Gargiulo; and Jodonna Handle and her companion Gary Sabourin; a nephew, Roy Handle; and five great-nieces, Zoe«i, Kayla and Haylie Sucharski; and Ava and Olivia Gargiulo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, Fred K. Dillon, Gloria D. Dresel and Eugene P. Dillon.
