M. Jane Mong Cornelius

Loving mother, grandma and great-grandma


- — M. Jane Mong Cornelius, 100 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, passed away of natural causes Wednesday morning (10-23-13) in her residence with her family at her side after an extended illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Cornelius was born Oct. 3, 1932, in the former Grove City Hospital, a daughter of Andrew Ralph and Irma Mae Vinton Mong.

Jane was raised in Barkeyville by her grandparents, Harrison Irwin Mong and Maude Rachel Hays Mong, along with her aunt, Effie Mohney. Her stepmother, Margaret Jean Mong, also helped to raise her.

She graduated from Grove City High School after transferring her senior year from the former Wesley High School, Irwin Township, Venango County.

Mrs. Cornelius retired from the former Zayre department store in Hermitage, where she worked evenings in customer service management. She previously worked at the former G.C. Murphy’s, Grove City.

She belonged to Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, and was a former member of both Oakland Avenue and the former Farrell United Methodist churches.

Her husband of 60 years, James J. Cornelius, whom she married Oct. 5, 1952, passed away April 14 of this year at the age of 83.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be sadly missed.

She is survived by: five children, James Bruce Cornelius and his wife Allison, Dubois; Deborah J. Cornelius, Hermitage; Kim DeVite and her husband Dan, Masury; Judy L. Fair and her companion Jesse Sheldon, Galien, Mich.; and Andrew Cornelius and his wife Allyson, Sharon; six grandchildren, Kevin Cornelius and his wife Maegan, Kansas City, Mo.; Kristi Woodburn and her husband Matthew, Ephrata, Pa.; Justin Noble-Fair, Galien; Tiffany Fair, Shenango Township; and Brittany Cornelius and Phillip Cornelius, both Sharon; and three great-grandchildren, Kyla Mae Woodburn, and twins Cael Lucas Woodburn and Welles Ean Woodburn, all Ephrata.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother and a brother, Raymond Mong.

Service: Funeral service at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David S. Evans, pastor of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment: Slippery Rock Cemetery.
