Brenda Darlene Trefftzs

Iowa woman was DOD teacher, had father here

- — Brenda Darlene Settle Trefftzs, Johnston, Iowa, passed away Tuesday (10-22-13) in Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was surrounded by loved ones, Elizabeth Alonzo, her daughter; Baerbel Brisbane, her sister; Dan Settle, her father; and Ronny Trefftzs, her husband, as she lost her four-year battle to ovarian cancer. She was 51.

Brenda was born Feb. 10, 1962, in Wiesbaden, Germany, to Helma and Dan Settle. She received her bachelor’s of science in education from Millersville University in Pennsylvania in 1984. Later she received her master’s degree in education curriculum development from the University of Phoenix.

She served her country for more than 25 years in the capacity of a German immersion teacher for the Department of Defense in several U.S. elementary schools in Germany. Brenda enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe with her family and friends, visiting countries such as Germany, Ireland, France and Greece.

She was proud to get the word out to everyone about early detection of this horrible disease. She was also a top revenue generator for the latest NOCC pledge drive in the Des Moines, Iowa, area.

Brenda was a kind, passionate and loving wife, mother, grandmother and daughter. She will be sorely missed by her entire family and her many friends in Germany and America.

She is survived by her husband, Ronny Trefftzs, at home; her father, Dan Settle, Hermitage; two daughters, Elizabeth Alonzo, Johnston, Iowa; and Stephanie Wills and her husband Shawn and their son Logan, Waterford; and a sister, Baerbel Brisbane and her husband Chris and their family, Jim Thorpe, Pa.

To help Brenda continue the fight against ovarian cancer, in lieu of flowers please send memorial contributions to NOCC IOWA, P.O. Box 214, Ankeny, IA 50021.
