Thomas J. ‘Palsey’ Kovach

Retired Post-Gazette distributor was Army vet


- — A funeral service will be held Friday for Thomas J. “Palsey” Kovach of Virginia Road, Hermitage. He passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) on Veteran’s Day, Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013, in his home after a six-month illness. He was 80.

Mr. Kovach was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Sharon, a son of Frank and Catherine Krkanich Kovach.

He was a lifelong area resident and a 1951 graduate of Farrell High School.

Tom was a distributor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for 33 years, retiring in 1999. He previously worked for 14 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant.

While serving in the Army for two years at Fort Carson, Colo., he married the former Katherine Baldwin on Nov. 6, 1954, in the former Farrell United Methodist Church. They recently celebrated 59 years together.

Tom was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and, mostly, spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jerry Kovach and his wife Cathy, Hermitage; and John Kovach and his wife Dawnelle, Transfer; and a granddaughter, Kayla Bonnett, Hermitage.

He also leaves two sisters, Dorothy Drivere and her husband Joe; and Delores Novak and her husband Donald, all Sharpsville.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his two-year-old son, Thomas J. Kovach Jr.; and a brother, Frank Kovach.

Family would like to give special thanks to Cindy and Troy, hospice nurses, who took care of him with kindness and compassion during his final days.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 1965 Shenango Valley Freeway, Suite #2, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Service: Funeral service at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Larry Haynes, pastor of Grace Chapel Community Church, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage, with military honors rendered at 10 a.m. Saturday (11-16-13) in the cemetery chapel by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex, and Post 5286, Farrell, and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.
