Robert Chapin McFarland

Retired farmer was active in New Wilmington area

- — Robert Chapin McFarland of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care, formerly of McFarland Drive, both New Wilmington, died Wednesday afternoon (2-26-14) in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. He was 80 years old.

Mr. McFarland was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Pulaski Township, Lawrence County, to Clarence Henderson McFarland and Lenora Margaret Chapin McFarland.

He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1953.

Mr. McFarland retired as a dairy farmer on the farm he grew up on, and enjoyed his life there to the fullest.

Mr. McFarland served his country in the Army, serving peacetime in Germany.

He was a lifelong member of New Wilmington Presbyterian Church, having served as an elder and deacon. Bob served as director on the Lawrence County Farm Show and on the zoning board for Pulaski Township.

His wife, the former Mary Roman Crossley, whom he married Nov. 30, 1973, preceded him in death Dec. 6, 2011.

Survivors include: his daughter, Janet Chapin McFarland and her husband Steven M. Walters, Alexander, Va.; two stepsons, Patrick Crossley and his wife Susan, New Castle; and David Crossley and his wife Terry, Springfield, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Crossley, California; eight grandchildren; and his longtime friend, Jim Coulter and his wife Debbie, New Wilmington.

Besides his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his parents.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday (3-5-14) in New Wilmington Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Lisa Hickman officiating.

Interment: Will follow at Neshannock Cemetery, New Wilmington.
