Hiroko Powell

Wheatland resident born in Japan was tax preparer


- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Hiroko Powell of Wheatland. She passed away peacefully at 11:30 p.m. Sunday (3-2-14) in her residence after an extended illness. She was 80.

Mrs. Powell was born July 3, 1933, in Wakanai, Hokkaido, Japan, a daughter of Askai and Masako Shimodaira.

She was educated in Sapporo, Japan.

In 1956, she met her husband, Richard S. Powell Sr., with whom she worked at Chitose Air Force Base in Hokkaido, Northern Japan. She and Richard were married May 17, 1957, in the U.S. Embassy in Sapporo.

In years past, she worked in Wheatland as a tax preparer.

She was of the Protestant faith. Hiroko enjoyed skiing in the Japanese mountains as a young girl and loved fishing most of her life. She also enjoyed bingo and her trips to local casinos to try her luck.

She is survived by: her husband, Richard S. Powell, Ret. U.S. Air Force, at home; two daughters, Candice J. Powell, Farrell; and Darla Hosack and her fiancé Joseph Huffman, Chincoteague, Va.; three sons, Richard S. Powell Jr., Farrell; Wesley F. Powell and his wife Daphne, San Marcos, Calif.; and Gene H. Powell, Greensboro, Md.; and her sister, Fumiko Kaneko, Japan.

She leaves her 12 grandchildren, Rodney, John, Dana, Amanda, Richard, Thomas, Danielle, Johannes, Julia, Christina, Thomas and Marissa; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas William Powell; and two brothers, Eichiro and Euji Shimodaira.
