Elizabeth H. ‘Betty’ George

New Lebanon Grange member was Polk retiree

- — Elizabeth H. “Betty” George, a longtime resident of New Lebanon Borough, Sandy Lake, died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, in DuBois (Pa.) Nursing Home. She was 94.

Mrs. George was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Pittsburgh to Bernard and Goldy Eichley Schroeder.

She attended Carrick High School, Pittsburgh, and retired from Polk (Pa.) State School and Hospital after 16 years of service.

Mrs. George was a Protestant by faith and a member of New Lebanon Community Church and its Ladies Aid.

As a member of Princess Rebekah Lodge 442, Sandy Lake, she served as noble grand from 1984-85. She was a longtime member of New Lebanon Grange.

Betty was a loving individual who created a warm and inviting home for all who graced her doorstep. She had a passion for canning the harvest from her and her husband’s garden, providing family and friends with her goods.

Her loving husband of 72 years, William H. “Bill” George, preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2008.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert E. George; and a grandson, Jeffrey George.

Surviving are: a son, William T. George, Meadville; two daughters, Dorothy “Dot” Hedglin and her husband Fritz, DuBois; and Marlene Tenon, Meadville; a daughter-in-law, Carol Rose Hassinger, Conneautville, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday (11-18-13) in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Richard C. Steinlechner, pastor of New Lebanon Community Church, officiating.

Interment: New Lebanon Cemetery, Mill Creek Township.
