Helen C. Baumgartner Peternac

Helen C. Baumgartner Peternac of Shenango Township, passed away of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at 7:15 a.m. Sunday (3-31-13) in her home in the company of her daughter. She was 87.

Mrs. Peternac was born June 11, 1925, in West Middlesex, a daughter of John Baumgartner and Emma Hermann Baumgartner.

She graduated from West Middlesex High School and earned her certificate of cosmetology from the New Castle School of Trades.

During World War II, Helen supported the wartime effort by working at local factories. Following the war, she became a licensed cosmetologist, eventually opening and operating Helen’s Beauty Shop from her home for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Peternac had a wide range of interests in addition to being a loving wife and mother and a successful business owner.

She was an excellent seamstress, an avid flower gardener and accomplished floral arranger, not to mention her gifts in the kitchen creating delectable home-cooked meals.

She enjoyed reading, attending the symphony, visiting museums and vacationing at the ocean with her family.

Helen was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, from the time of its inception in the 1950s.

Surviving are her daughter, Diane Peternac, Shenango Township; two sisters, Marie McConnell, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and Margaret Baker, Farrell; and a brother, Louis Baumgartner, Sharon. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Steve Peternac, whom she married July 26, 1951, died April 4, 2009.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Madeline Swetlech, Rose Morris, Elizabeth Lochner, Julia White, Matilda Baumgartner and an infant, Emma Baumgartner; and two brothers, John Baumgartner and Joseph Baumgartner.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, with Monsignor Robert M. Malene, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
