Joseph Frye Jr.

Sharon Steel retiree belonged to Baptist churches

---- — A funeral and committal service will be held Tuesday for Joseph Frye Jr. of White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, formerly of Brentwood Drive, Pymatuning Township. He passed away at 5:51 a.m. Thursday (5-23-13) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 89.

Mr. Frye was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Clark to Joseph Frye Sr. and Delphia Hassel Frye.

He was employed as a ram driver for more than 30 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, retiring in 1985. He was previously employed at General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant.

Mr. Frye was a member of First Baptist Church, Greenville, and had been an active member of the former Greencrest Baptist Church, Pymatuning Township, where he served as a trustee, sang in the choir and was a church Boy Scout leader.

An avid bowler, he bowled at Reynolds Lanes in the Wednesday Mixed and the Friday retiree leagues. In addition, he enjoyed competing at horseshoes in local fairs.

Mr. Frye served in the U.S. Army during World War II; his commendations included a Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrow.

His wife, the former Beva Jean Munnal, whom he married July 26, 1946, passed away July 17, 2007.

Surviving are: two daughters, Beth Krueger and her husband David, Hadley; and Diana J. Bowman and her husband Kermit, Transfer; a son, Robert J. Frye and his wife Lorna, Greenville; two brothers, Richard Frye and his wife Joyce, Transfer; and Gerald Frye and his wife Betty, Greenville; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Frye.

Service: Funeral and committal at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. David E. Cox, pastor of First Baptist Church, Greenville, officiating. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds, will render military honors at the conclusion of the service.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
