Retired Montgomery Ward supervisor took bus trips


---- — Helen Kantner Hodge of Greenville, formerly of 15 W. Connelly Blvd., Sharon, and Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Hodge was born Feb. 22, 1928, in Sharon, a daughter of William P. and Alice Kantner Joy.

She had worked as an accounting supervisor at the former Montgomery Ward stores in Sharon and Niles, Ohio, for 24 years, retiring in 1983.

She was a member of AARP, a retired person’s organization.

Helen enjoyed reading and going on bus trips. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Her husband, Leonard B. Hodge, whom she married July 9, 1945, died Jan. 12, 1988.

Her survivors include: two daughters, Shirley J. Ulrich and her husband Marcel, Stella, N.C.; and Margie A. Lucas and her husband Jeff, Greenville; four grandchildren, Lenny Portolese, Maysville, N.C.; and Jamie Portolese, McDonald, Ohio; Tami Levis, Sharpsville; and Scott Lucas, Cleveland; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William I. Joy.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Humane Society of Mercer County, 3005 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148.
