Gladys Mae Carlin

Lifelong Sharon church member was storyteller

- — A funeral service will be held Friday for Gladys Mae Carlin of  Brookfield. She passed away quietly at home after a brief illness, early Tuesday morning (11-5-13) with her daughters close by. She was 89.

Gladys was a special lady who touched many lives with her faith, strength and love. She will be lovingly remembered as a sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a teacher, storyteller, gardener and a child of God. She made friends wherever she was. She loved music and traveling with her family; her home was the gathering place for holidays and family functions. Gladys enjoyed the “Fruits of Her Plum Tree,” a story she wrote about the simple joys of life.

Gladys was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Sharon to Emanuel Blair and Gladys Evans Jones.

She graduated from Sharon High School in 1942 and continued to meet with a few of her classmates for monthly luncheons. She also belonged to a monthly card club.

Mrs. Carlin worked for a number of years at Lee’s Plumbing in Sharon and attended Youngstown State University.

On July 5, 1946, Gladys married Edwin “Ted” Carlin. They had four children and were happily married for 44 years until Ted’s passing in 1990.

Gladys was a lifelong, faithful member of Community of Christ Church in Sharon and through the years, served as stewardship commissioner, youth leader and historian. She taught Sunday school for 40 years and will be fondly remembered by generations of her Sunday school students.

She served as a band booster and Parent Teacher Association member at Brookfield Local School District.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her parents; her stepmother, Mary Rose Vogel; an infant son, Michael Blair Carlin; and three brothers, Sidney, Walter and Roger Jones.

Surviving are: two daughters, Kathi Bateman and her husband Chuck, West Middlesex; Holly Janusko and her husband Bob, Sharon; a son, Dr. Kerry Drew Carlin, Greenville, N.C.; four grandsons, Bob Moon and his wife Pam, Bedford, Texas; Mike Moon and his wife Barb; and Nate Moon, all Fredericksburg, Va.; and Seth Moon and his wife Ramona, Dallas, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Carley, Andrew, Elisabeth, Audrey, Braeden, Evan and Mercedes Moon; and a sister, Ruth Record and her husband Don, Brookfield.

Our beloved “Aunt Glady” also leaves many adoring nieces and nephews, stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, in-laws, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed and her memory will be forever cherished by those whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family, in keeping with Mrs. Carlin’s wishes, has requested memorial contributions be made to Community of Christ Church, 506 Elm Ave., Sharon, PA 16146; or Hillcrest Flynn Pet Care Foundation, Box 1243, Hermitage, PA 16148.
