William Ira Slater

Trinity Industries retiree owned company with son

---- — William Ira Slater, 677 Billy Boyd Road, Stoneboro, New Vernon Township, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was 75.

Born July 30, 1937, in Clarks Mills, he was a son of Jesse Luke and Hilda Mae Fisher Slater.

Ira attended Lakeview High School.

He was of the Protestant faith.

In his early years Ira had his own truck and hauled cans of milk to Jack’s Cheesehouse in New Wilmington and later drove truck for the Laubscher Cheese Co. of Mercer where he did long hauls delivering cheese. He worked the most as a hand burner and machine operator for Greenville Steel Car in Greenville and then retired from Trinity Industries at age 62.

After retiring he worked for H&H Materials and Slippery Rock Materials until the fall of 2011. Also, he and his son Steve owned and operated the Ira Slater and Son Trenching Co. He loved to work and had worked well into his illness.

Ira loved working with draft horses and also along with son Steve he enjoyed going to truck and tractor pulls. Most of all he loved his time spent with his family and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He married Barbara R. Giebner on March 11, 1961, and she survives at home. Also surviving are a daughter, Lisa Marie Moore and her husband Robert, Mercer; two sons, Stephen Ira Slater and his wife Wanda, Stoneboro; and Craig William Slater, Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, Logan and Dylan Moore, Mercer; and Sean and Hannah Slater, Raleigh; four sisters, Grace Parker and her husband Sam, Zelienople; Mary Lewis, Stoneboro; Joanne Giebner, Sandy Lake; and Alice Henderson and her husband Charles, Stoneboro; two brothers, Edward Slater and his wife Rowene, Clarks Mills; and Keith Slater and his wife Pat, Aurora, Ohio.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Pamela Greene.

Calling hours: 1 p.m. to time of service Saturday (8-18-12) in  SCOTT A. BLACK FUNERAL HOME, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.

Service: Funeral service at 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Lucas Hannah, pastor of Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, Meadville, officiating.

Interment: New Lebanon Cemetery, Mill Creek Township.
