Dr. J. Glen Doran Jr.

Physician, Air Force vet had practice in Grove City

---- — GREENSBURG, Pa. – Dr. J. Glen Doran Jr., Greensburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, in his home after a lengthy illness due to kidney failure. He was 70.

Dr. Doran was born June 8, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., a son of John G. Doran Sr. and Margaret Leudemann Doran.

He is survived by his wife Katy Koller Doran; a son, Thomas Doran and his wife Tiffany, Erie; a daughter, Megan Reeher and her husband Jason, Slippery Rock; two grandchildren, Mason and Norah Doran, Erie; a sister, Sheridan and her husband Dr. Richard Felkner, Charlotte, N.C.; and a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Glen was predeceased by his parents; a son, John Glen Doran III; and a brother, Thomas F. Doran.

An Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, Glen graduated from Brentwood (Mo.) High School in 1961 and attended Texas A&M, College Station; and William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., where he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1966.

Prior to receiving his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences in 1979, Glen worked for the Kansas City Chiefs football club for two seasons, 1966-67 and ’67-’68, as assistant trainer and equipment manager, participating in the historic AFL-NFL showdown between the Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers.

In addition, he was a data processor at McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, St. Louis; and a real estate broker in Kansas City.

Following a medical internship in Sandusky, Ohio, and residency in Lancaster, Pa., Glen served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force, 1981-89, assigned to F-15 squadrons at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia and Bitburg, Germany; and B1-B bomber at McConnell AFB, Wichita, Kan. He achieved a rank of major and was a lieutenant colonel selectee at the time of his discharge.

Glen conducted a family practice in Grove City, 1989-93, and also managed the clinic for the State Correctional Institution, Findley Township. He was athletic department team physician for Grove City High School and the physician for the Grove City College clinic.

A diagnosis of viral cardiomyopathy forced Glen to close his medical practice in 1993 when he became a candidate for a heart transplant at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, participating in the experimental artificial heart program. He was the third patient in that FDA-monitored program to receive the new generation of battery-operated LVAD (left ventricular assist device) and the first patient worldwide to be discharged from the hospital setting to Family House for the duration of the wait for a transplant, April 20, 1994.

Prior to retirement in 2007, Glen worked at the Bureau of Disability Determination for Social Security, Greensburg.

Glen was a member of Maplewood Presbyterian Church, Greensburg; the Air Force 1st Fighter Association; and the Train Collectors Association; and was past president of the Rotary Club of Jeannette, Pa.
