Melvin R. ‘Duke’ Harris

Copperweld Steel retiree was active in K of C

WARREN, Ohio — Melvin R. “Duke” Harris of Howland Township, Trumbull County, was called home to be with the Lord at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, while a patient in St. Joseph Health Care System, Warren, after an extended illness. He was 83.

Mr. Harris was born April 22, 1930, in Warren, a son of Charles K. and Anna Yuhn Harris.

A proud defender of our freedom, Mr. Harris served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He found employment as a crane repairman for Copperweld Steel, Warren, where he worked for 38 years before officially retiring.

He married the former Theresa M. Burns on June 25, 1955, and together they spent the next 58 years together side by side.

A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Vienna. His other memberships include Knights of Columbus Council 620, Warren, where he achieved his fourth degree; American Legion Post 540, Cortland, for more than 56 years; and the Supreme Council of the Royal Arcanum.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, gardening and cheering on the Cleveland Indians.

Survivors include: his wife, Theresa; his son, Melvin R. “Bob” Harris Jr., Howland Township; his daughter, Theresa Ann Riccadonna and her husband Ron, Masury; his five grandsons; and his great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Frank and Charles Harris; and his sisters, Helen Shaffer and Delores “Dolly” Goberish.

As suggested by his family, memorial contributions may be made to an American Cancer Society in your area.

Calling hours: Time of gathering will be recognized from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (9-11-13) in BRICELAND FUNERAL SERVICE, 397 state Route 7, Brookfield. (330-509-3135)

Service: Funeral service held in his honor at 10 a.m. Thursday (9-12-13) in the funeral home.

Laid to rest: All Soul’s Cemetery, Bazetta Township, Trumbull County.
