Roma L. Carter

Longtime church member was preschool teacher


---- — BOARDMAN, Ohio – Roma L. Carter, beloved mother and grandmother who resided at The Commons at Greenbriar of Boardman and was formerly of 335 Sterling Ave., Sharon, died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at The Commons with her family by her side. She was 96.

Mrs. Carter was born July 20, 1916, in Carleton, Neb., a daughter of Andrew J. “AJ” Riddle and Lou Ella Beabers Riddle.

She graduated from Doland High School in 1933 and from Northern State Teachers College.

After the death of her parents in 1940, she moved to Sharon. She then worked for General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant where she met her husband, V.H. “Nick” Carter, whom she married Oct. 24, 1942. He died April 25, 1979.

Following marriage, Roma returned to her love of teaching and enjoyed more than 40 years as a preschool teacher with Mrs. Fitzgerald’s Kindergarten.

Mrs. Carter was an active member for more than 70 years of First United Methodist Church, Sharon, where she served on various committees and was a willing and dedicated volunteer.

She is survived by her son, Jerry Carter and his wife Mary, Boardman; her daughter, Sarah Oetking and her husband John, Western Springs, Ill.; her grandchildren, Joe and Becky Carter, Aimee and Bob Smith, James Oetking and Steve Oetking; and her great-grandchildren, Norah and Reid Carter and Abby and Carter Smith.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her granddaughter, Jillian Carter Oetking; and five brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., Sharon, PA 16146.

Calling hours: Family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (5-4-13) in First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., Sharon.

Service: Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Richard N. Carlson, pastor, officiating.

Burial: Cremation has taken place.
