Raymond M. ‘Merle’ Campbell

WWII Navy Seabee worked for Steel Car

---- — Services will be held Tuesday for Raymond M. “Merle” Campbell, Quinter Road, Salem Township, who passed away at 11:21 a.m. Friday (5-3-13) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a period of declining health. He was 85.

Mr. Campbell was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Fredonia, a son of the late Jesse A. and Mary E. Redfoot Campbell.

On June 17, 1950, he married the former Ivarea J. Roberts, who survives.

“Merle,” as he was known to his family and friends, had been employed by the former Greenville Steel Car Co., which subsequently became Trinity Industries, from which he retired.

At age 16, Merle enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a member of the Seabees. He served during World War II in the South Pacific Theater of Operations and witnessed the nuclear atomic testing at Bikini Atoll.

He was a jack-of-all-trades and lived by the motto of the Seabees: “Can do, with willing hearts and skillful hands; the difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer.”

He was a life member of Cpl. James O. Jordan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Greenville.

He was of the Methodist Faith.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by: two sons, Thomas D. Campbell Sr. and his wife Catherine of Meadville; and Kevin M. Campbell and his companion Colleen Donahue of Hadley; a sister, Marilyn McFadden of Sharpsville; a brother, Jesse A. Campbell Jr. and his wife Lura of Jamestown; eight grandchildren, Thomas D. Campbell Jr. and his fiancée Marla; Christopher M. Campbell and his wife Lisa; Ashley Campbell and her companion Carter Stallsmith; Kirk T. Campbell; Kyle E. Campbell; Branden Hunter; Merlin Hunter; and Sebastion Ender; and three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel  J. Campbell, Brianna Campbell and Savannah Stallsmith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; three sisters, Freda Keller, Virginia Bennett Korvista and Louise Visniesky, and a brother Robert E. Campbell.

Service: A service of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday (5-7-13) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Visniesky, deceased’s nephew, officiating.
